Introduction
Children with diabetes have the right to attend school without discrimination, to participate in school activities, and to have the benefit of competent and safe care while at school, away from their family. Teachers and classmates alike should receive education about diabetes, both to dispel myths and prejudices, and to learn ways in which they can promote good care.
After a period of successful adaptation, young people may have diabetes-related problems in the longer term. Their condition changes as they grow. The same may be true of a young person’s attitudes and skills regarding diabetes and its management. School-age children need special considerations to help them manage their condition, such as time and space to self-monitor their blood glucose.
Diet and the timing of meals and snacks need to be addressed with teachers and administrative personnel. If food is provided by the school rather than brought from home, the menu should offer choices that are appropriate to the needs of children with diabetes.
