The DAWN Award 2009 Ceremony
Stigma and coping skills highlighted with the DAWN Award 2009
This year's DAWN Award went to Dr. Sanjay Kalra, Bharti Hospital, India for his project on coping skills strategies for youth. Dr. Sanjay Kalra was awarded for:
- Addressing a neglected, yet important aspect of diabetes care: cop-ing skills strategies for youth
- Utilising both a low cost, validated, easy-to-use diagnostic tool and inter-ventional therapy
- Commitment to supporting careful evaluation and wider dissemination.
Martin Silink, president of IDF handed over the DAWN award and congratulated Dr. Kalra for his persistence and the importance of taking a holistic approach to this issue.
The DAWN award 2009 was seeking to reward projects that significantly improve the health and quality of life of children and young people with diabetes and/or their families by addressing one of the five DAWN Youth priority areas. This year 31 applications from 17 countries were submitted.
DAWN Award 2009 - a partnership initiative
The award is given by Novo Nordisk on behalf of the International Diabetes Federation and the International DAWN Advisory Board and was announced at the Novo Nordisk hosted symposium on DAWN Youth “inspiring change in clinical care”. The event took place during the 35th ISPAD conference on 2-5 September 2009 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The symposium speakers – all internationally recognised experts - high-lighted the progress of the DAWN Youth Call to Action and called for im-provement in care for children and young people with diabetes. DAWN™ Mind Youth, a quality assessment system was introduced with great suc-cess and new tools and ideas were shared to truly inspire change in clinical paediatric care.
