DAWN™ Youth – Diabetes is different for children

Building on the global International Diabetes Federation Youth charter published in 2007, and the findings of the original DAWN™ study, the DAWN™ Youth programme was launched in partnership with the International Diabetes Federation and International Society for Pediatric Adolescent Diabetes. It was realised that diabetes in young people was different to diabetes in adults and a separate study was required to identify opportunities to improve outcomes among young people with diabetes and their families.

The programme aimed at exploring perceptions among children and young people with diabetes, their families, and healthcare professionals and policy-makers as:

  • The majority of children and youth with diabetes are still in poor glycaemic control today
  • The unique human challenges of diabetes in young people are not understood in society
  • Obesity and type 2 diabetes in youth is a rising problem that need to be addressed
